THE BLUFFS
Building Resilience
Perched atop a scenic bluff in the Pacific Palisades, this fire rebuild balances memory, function, and resilience. The home recalls its predecessor by maintaining the classic silhouette of the original pitched roofs but breathes new life into the structure through updated layouts and improved spatial flow. To help address the unique challenges of a fire rebuild, the home is constructed using a robust selection of fire-resistant, sustainable materials—including engineered composite woods, brick, and metal—implemented in a muted color palette that emphasizes rich textures and visual depth.
The architecture is defined by its connection to the exterior environment, utilizing expansive windows and strategically placed outdoor spaces to capitalize on the temperate climate and ocean views. The layout features an array of gathering spaces such as front and back patios alongside upper-level terraces. These areas extend the footprint of the home, inviting residents to experience the coastal breeze from multiple vantage points throughout the property.
The exterior highlights a strong connection to the natural environment and is comprised of landscaping that is both drought-tolerant and fire-resistant. By incorporating a mix of decomposed granite, stone, gravel, and turf, the grounds offer a sophisticated aesthetic that requires minimal water, provides a buffer against environmental risks, and organizes a variety of usable spaces. This holistic approach ensures the home is not only a beautiful sanctuary for gathering but also a durable landmark tailored to its specific California context.
